Abstract
The study of the skeletal material of two Merovingian cemetaries in southern Germany reveals that diseases of the middle ear and its pneumatic areas appear in older persons and above all in members of the lower class more frequently than in younger persons and in members of the upper class. Such diseases appear to also be present in pre-Columbian Indian populations more frequently than has previously been supposed. The results suggest that environmental factors played a much greater role in early-historical times in the development of diseases within the area of the temporal bone than is the case today.
